How the heck do you spell mamaw for grandma? I've heard it a million times but never had to spell it. Is it mamau, mamaw, or perhaps something with an apostrophe like ma'am?

It's just like you have it, except I'd probably cap it, Mamaw. Or if the accent were really pronounced, maybe Ma-maw.

Thanks. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it. I took an Illinois attorney yesterday and we were joking about who had the more corrupt politician. I momentarily had the upper hand only because mine has already been sentenced!

Dunno what state you're in, but I'll bet we beat you in VOLUME of corrupt governors. Very Happy Being that it's a requirement for candidacy.

Up Yours

(pardon the thread drift)

And I'll ditto DepoWife on the "mamaw" spelling, just to keep it on topic.

We spelled it MaMa. I had two of them, and a Great MaMa.

FWIW, I have a mamaw, and that's how we spell it, capping using the same rules as with grandma.

My mother is a Mammaw, and she spells it with the double M.

Thanks, guys. I feel so boring. My family just used plain old grandma and grandpa. I think if my son has kids I'm going to tell him I would like to be called "your highness." Hey, if all these other names are flying around out there, why not. I mean, after all, I will reign over a land of missed-bedtimes, toys, and sugary treats not seen in their own homelands. And much like the jesters of old, when they become tired, cranky, and cease to amuse me, off they go back to their parents.

LOL, Jules! My family seems to have a "thing" about coming up with names for grandparents other than the standard grandma and grandpa. I had a Mamaw and a Papaw, and my parents and their siblings are named such things as Grammy, Papa, Nana, GiGi, and Mimi (or Meme, not sure how they spell that one). Yeah, I guess it's mostly the women in the family. They all think "Grandma" makes them sound too old. Me, I don't care what they call me as long as my kids wait until I'm at least 50 to give me some. They have been officially warned. Twisted Evil

That's how I've generally seen it spelled, even in novels.
