I just learned of another court reporter forum and thought I'd sign up, to see if I could learn any helpful reporter tips from them as well.

I got my approval email and was surprised to find a link asking me to pay a membership fee with my credit card.

Wanted to check with you guys if this is legit before I put my credit card number out there on an unknown website.

Anyone familiar with this practice/site?

What site? I've not heard of any social networking sites that require payment to participate. What services would you be paying for?

Monte, share the site. Most sites, the most valuable ones, are FREE ... Depoman and Facebook being the top 2 in my opinion. CSRNation is good, but they only charge for the Find Reporter option.

It was the CSRNation forum. Another reporter had told me she gets tips on there for her software, which is what I was looking for. I'm on Procat, and not many people on the forums are on that system. I'll have to see if there's a way I can post on general questions, not the find reporter option, without paying a fee. I was not going to use the site to cover jobs or look for jobs, only to ask questions to help with everyday reporter questions. I also participate in the compuserve forum, but it is mostly scopists on there, so looking for a forum with more reporters. Glad I found you guys, though, and I'll come to Depoman first with any questions. Thanks again!

Is it that StenographersWorld, or something like that, that has been the buzz bc of its fee?

What is the Facebook forum you're referring to? I'd be interested in joining that one. Thanks!

Yes, I'm addicted. LOVE Facebook and find it so very valuable and interesting. To repeat, anyone on fb who would like to send me a friend request, I post 99.9% about court reporting and not personal stuff. But here are my groups:

Total Eclipse FB Group
Stenobabble
Court Reporters of North Carolina
The Place for Court Reporters
Jade King's Stenoquery
Steno Briefs for Court Reporters
Freelance Court Reporters - NCRA
The Court Reporter/Scopist Connection
Chairs From Hell
Guardians of the record
Jim Barker's Court Reporters Forum
Punctuation for Court Reporters
Court Reporters Q&A
CAT Stance - Who Has The Best Technology?
Encouraging Court Reporting Students
Tidbits for Court Reporters
Court Reporters/Students for Advancement of Short Stroke Theory
Court Reporting Stuff, Buy/Sell/Swap
NY State Court Reporters Association
One Word, Two Words, Apostrophe, Hyphen, OH MY!
The Brief Exchange
Stenofabulous
Court Reporters of Facebook
Steno Briefs
Friends of MVR

... those are probably the most pertinent to reporting, as well as some invitation-only and private groups, which I love as well!

See you on the fb! (It did start out as "The Facebook")

I've never been asked to pay anything to be a member of CSRnation and have been a member for years.

MaryAnn - thanks for posting your FB sites.

I'm a late-comer to FB reporting sites, and it took me, oh, about five minutes to become addicted to them! You're right - valuable and interesting, and very informative. I've gotten so, so many tips and tricks and information about my software, punctuation, and just general cool stuff.

Kimberly, as you know, one of the best things about fb is the instant feedback. You post a comment, someone clicks "Like," and you feel nothing but love, right? I enjoy seeing realtime pics of people's dinners in the crockpot, flowers on their window sill, and what they're wearing to work. Thoroughly enjoy the reporting-related info as well. Things that I don't care for or that piss me off I simply scroll through. Be warned that others get totally caught up in some fb /SH*EUT, but there's an art to facebooking. If you just consider it like a cocktail party where you're wandering from conversation to conversation, dropping a bomb every once in a while, then moving on, it's such great fun!

Think the new members of CSRN pay a one-time fee of $20 (at or about). I am in favor of Kelli charging agencies to post jobs, and I think that's coming--not so much in favor of charging new reporters to join. However, I think access to site is worth a one-time Jackson. $$$

Holy Stenotype Machine, Mary Ann, how do you ever find time to work or eat or sleep???

You're like one of those people who (used to) read a dozen newspapers every day -- oh, wait! Margie T. does!

My hat's off to you! Shocked!
